General Sedation

Sedation dentistry enables us to provide a wide variety of dental treatment safely and comfortably for our patients. At Johnston Dental Care sedation dentistry is available for a broad spectrum of reasons, ranging from dental anxiety, difficulty sitting long periods of time or even difficulty getting or staying numb. With any procedure, necessary precautions are taken prior to sedation to meet the patients’ needs medically. The forms of sedation we offer include nitrous oxide, oral sedation and general sedation. General sedation is available for patients who are in need. Johnston Dental Care is available to do general sedation on site with the assistance of an anesthesiologist. During general sedation, the patient will be asleep for the dental procedure and be woken up once the procedure is complete. General sedation is normally administered intravenously or by inhalation by an anesthetist who also monitors the patient’s vital signs (breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, temperature) during the procedure. While under general anesthesia, a patient is unable to feel pain and will likely wake with some short-term amnesia (memory loss). Each patient recovers in office while monitoring vital signs before being released. With general sedation, a driver will be needed to transport the patient home after the procedure.

Dr. Jeffery Kobernick

Dr. Jeffery Kobernick

Born in Roseburg, but raised in rural eastern Oregon, Dr. Kobernik has always been accustomed to small town life. It wasn’t until the fall of 2002 when he had to bite the bullet and move to the city in order to attend dental school.

In 2006, Dr. Kobernik received his Doctorate in Medical Dentistry from Oregon Health and Science University in Portland, OR. Upon graduation, eastern Oregon drew him back, where he accepted a position as an associate dentist for the Medical Center Dental Office in Pendleton, OR. While there, he was staffed at St. Anthony’s Hospital. It was this hospital were Dr. Kobernik provided dentistry to adults, children, and those patients with developmental delays under general anesthesia with the assistance of a separate anesthesia provider in an operating room setting. Additionally, he sat on St. Anthony’s Anesthesia Committee and Cancer Care Committee.

In January 2009, he and his family moved back to Roseburg where he bought his own private dental practice. His professional interests focus on family and general dentistry as well as dental alveolar surgery, extractions, advanced bone grafting procedures, and dental implant procedures. His experience and ongoing education gave him opportunities to mentor and teach other dentists in the field of implant dentistry. On November 8, 2014, Dr. Kobernik was honored with the American Academy of Implant Dentistry’s Associate Fellow designation after passing rigorous written and oral exams. While maintaining his practice in Roseburg, Dr. Kobernik has proudly served as the past president and past vice president of our local Oregon Dental Society affiliate, the Umpqua Dental Society.

Although Dr. Kobernik was trained in IV Moderate Sedation and was able to sedate his patients in office for a variety of dental procedures, he recognized that many patients needed to be sedated to a greater level than what is allowed by the Oregon Board of Dentistry under an IV Moderate Sedation permit. Because of the profound need for in office sedation and anesthesia, his history of working in hospital setting, and his work with other anesthesia providers, Dr. Kobernik decided to put his private practice on hold and go back to school.

His interest in anesthesia took him to New York City and was given the opportunity to be trained as a Dentist Anesthesiologist. Based out of NYU Langone Hospitals – Brooklyn, Dr. Kobernik excelled as a resident and was named Chief Resident at NYU’s Dental Anesthesia residency. He served two of the three years as chief resident of the program and was recognized for his outstanding service by his program directors. While attending his residency, Dr. Kobernik, spoke at multiple events for the American Dental Society of Anesthesia including national meeting held in Chicago, IL, Brooklyn, NY, and Portland, OR.

As a good standing member of Oregon Dental Association, Oregon Academy of General Dentistry, American Academy of Implant Dentistry, and resident member of both the American Dental Society of Anesthesia and the American Society of Dentist Anesthesiologists, he does his best to represent the dental profession as a whole while caring for his patients.
