Sedation Dentistry

General Sedation
Sedation dentistry enables us to provide a wide variety of dental treatment safely and comfortably for our patients. At Johnston Dental Care sedation dentistry is available for a broad spectrum of reasons, ranging from dental anxiety, difficulty sitting long periods of time or even difficulty getting or staying numb. With any procedure, necessary precautions are taken prior to sedation to meet the patients’ needs medically. The forms of sedation we offer include nitrous oxide, oral sedation and general sedation. General sedation is available for patients who are in need. Johnston Dental Care is available to do general sedation on site with the assistance of an anesthesiologist. During general sedation, the patient will be asleep for the dental procedure and be woken up once the procedure is complete. General sedation is normally administered intravenously or by inhalation by an anesthetist who also monitors the patient’s vital signs (breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, temperature) during the procedure. While under general anesthesia, a patient is unable to feel pain and will likely wake with some short-term amnesia (memory loss). Each patient recovers in office while monitoring vital signs before being released. With general sedation, a driver will be needed to transport the patient home after the procedure.

Dr. Phillips Anesthesiologist

At Johnston Dental Care we have the privilege of working with Dr. Todd Phillips, an anesthesiologist out of Longview, WA. Dr. Phillips received his degree from Loma Linda University School of Medicine in 1993 and has been in practice for more than 20 years as an anesthesiologist. Dr. Phillips takes the upmost care when handling patients specific needs and dental anxiety, whether it’s comforting a young child or helping an adult make this the best experience possible. Prior to your sedation appointment, Dr. Phillips thoroughly reviews your medical history and prepares for the upcoming appointment. With his experience and great patient care Dr. Phillips is able to comfortably get the patient to sleep using the most comfortable approach for the patient. This can be done intravenously or by inhalation depending on the patient’s needs. Throughout the procedure he will monitor everything from breathing and heart rate to the patient’s blood pressure and temperature. Once treatment has been completed Dr. Phillips brings the patient out of general anesthesia and begins the recovery process. The patient then recovers in one of our recovery rooms while Dr. Phillips monitors them before clearing them for release.
